I've been wondering why my Blog receives so little attention from my clients and from my industry. I read other peoples Blogs and some of what they have to say ticks with me, but most is largely meaningless to me however well written it might be. I also aim to attempt through my own efforts to show my clients some results. But they are hard to find.
The main reason: we ignore our target audience at our peril. Yes we have to write for the people we want to attract to our service. We also have to use a Blog for what it is supposed to be.
So just what is it supposed to be?
Primarily the best use of a Blog is as a Diary... I think that is why there is such a focus on dates within a Blog. Think adventure, trips, specific time frame based projects and you have the bases of needing a Blog. To let people know what you're up to at a current time.
Also following on from the Diary theme - a Blog is supposed to be your views... not corporate news or sales material or even really links to video or other material. It is therefore also NOT a promotional platform. It is not something from which to 'get-business' from.
Examining the use of Blogs that are successful, 9 times out of ten they are current affairs based, news, journalistic in content, relevant here and now and then quickly out of date. Not a repository for FAQ's then. Taking the BBC or Telegraph as examples virtually every journalist on their books has his own Blogging area where it clear states these are an individuals views.
And that, my clients, is what we must do. We must widen the use of a Blog to increase personal views within your various industries... Many of my own past 'tutorials' on things like installing Facebook or doing something with Twitter, are a waste of time. I need to write stuff that informs you (news) on my views of the web industry.
Therefore expect fewer 'how to' articles and more 'I think' articles in this space. And if that is an issue for you, let me know, in the comments below, all I really want is to hear from you.
